Similar Symptoms Of ADHD And Coeliac Ailment

From time to time, various celiac diseases are being distinctly overrepresented among patients having attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). According to the results of a few recent studies, it has been found that a gluten-free diet pointedly boosted ADHD symptoms in patients with celiac disease. Does that mean celiac disease and gluten sensitivity are the roots of ADHD symptoms? Let us find through the post!

Moreover, parents of ADHD children also have stated for quite a long time that diet seems to play a big role in their children's indications of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Here are the different kinds of symptoms of ADHD -

ADHD symptoms differ from person to person as there are different kinds of ADHD.
 

  • Having a short attention duration and being distracted easily
  • Not being able to stick to tasks that are monotonous or time-consuming
  • Having difficulty in organising tasks
  • Continually fidgeting
  • Unnecessary physical movement
  • Talking excessively
  • Disturbing conversations
  • Has trouble following instructions
  • Forgetfulness
  • Inability to deal with stress

The signs of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can be categorised into 2 types of behavioural problems: inattention, and hyperactivity. These symptoms are being usually noticeable before the age of 6.

Celiac Disease and ADHD

Studies have shown that children, as well as adults with celiac disease, do seem to have an advanced risk of ADHD than the general population. The parents of children with ADHD reported important developments in their kids’ behaviour and functioning with a gluten-free diet. Studies show it's probable that gluten plays a big role in ADHD symptoms, but then again, it's less clear how big a role it plays.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune ailment that's caused when you eat gluten. Gluten is a protein present in wheat, barley, rye, and other grains. This makes dough elastic and gives bread its stringy texture. Constipation, Flatulence, Diarrhea are some of the symptoms of Celiac disease. Numerous people with celiac disease also defines problems with attention, memory, and behavioural issues. Also, ADHD is often a co-occurring condition to celiac disease.
 

It’s significant to acknowledge though, that not everyone with ADHD also has celiac disease or vice versa. Finding the precise number of people who have both, ADHD and celiac disease, is a tough task for a couple of reasons. Some symptoms of coeliac disease that you may be familiar with comprise of:
 

  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Intestinal spasms and/or pain
  • Diarrhea and/or constipation
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Headaches/migraines
  • Iron shortage anaemia/vitamin & mineral insufficiencies
  • Joint/bone pain
  • Allergies
  • Irritability/moodiness/anxiety and/or depression

Well, if you are uncertain whether gluten may be contributing to your or your child's ADHD symptoms or not then you should consider testing for celiac disease. It is important to note that not all symptoms include the digestive system, celiac symptoms in children may include something more indirect.
